TD PEI Jazz & Blues presents the Island Jazz Messengers septet featuring this year’s Doug Riley Artist Doug Millington and singer Kelley Mooney – Wednesday June 21 7:30pm at St. Paul’s Church.

Island Jazz Messengers concert

Our 2017 festival puts the focus on celebrating the incredible depth of music talent here in Atlantic Canada, beginning with this intimate jazz show at historic St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Charlottetown.  With three past Doug Riley Artists, the Island Jazz Messengers will perform original hard bop sextet music, and tunes made famous by George Russell, Horace Silver, Doug Riley and Ella Fitzgerald.
Kelley Mooney will join the band for the second set singing songs made famous by the late great Ella Fitzgerald.

Doug Millington is this year’s “Doug Riley Artist” for the 2017 TD PEI Jazz and Blues Festival. Our Doug Riley Award is presented each year to an Island musician who exemplifies the spirit of dedication to musical excellence and to developing the jazz and blues community as personified by Doug Riley, the late, keyboard master, composer, producer and arts exponent who chose PEI as his home.

The Island Jazz Messengers is PEI’s fun and funky hard-bop sextet featuring some of the Island’s best improvisers, performing a mix of original charts and famous hard bop arrangements. The band is dedicated to continuing the tradition of East Coast hard-bop combos like those led by Art Blakey, Miles Davis, Cannonball Adderley, Lee Morgan and Horace Silver, and influential jazz arrangers such as Oliver Nelson famous for “Blues and the Abstract Truth”. The “funky” label refers to the rollicking, rhythmic feeling associated with hard bop, with all the influences from soul, R&B and early fusion.
